Overview

The 2027 Honda Pilot 3-row midsize SUV is settling in nicely after last year’s mid-cycle refresh and remains one of the most well-rounded midsizers out there, seating up to eight people, with a usable third row, and including an off-road-oriented TrailSport trim. A naturally aspirated V6 with a 10-speed auto is standard, with either FWD or AWD, depending on the trim, and no hybrid option is available.

What’s New for 2027

The 2027 Pilot remains mostly unchanged following its 2026 update, but there are a few new paint colors and wheel designs for the Black Edition and TrailSport trims. Honda is working on a hybrid version of the Pilot that is also expected to debut in the near future.

Exterior

The Pilot is boxy, upright, and conservative, trading style for practicality and maximized cabin space. A large rectangular grille with mesh inserts sits between straight-edged LED headlights. A C-pillar picked out in body color visually connects the lower body to the roof, which comes with standard roof rails. Most trims ride on 20-inch wheels, but the EX-L and TrailSport get 18s, the latter with all-terrain tires, a raised ride height, skid plates, and a hitch receiver. All but the Sport and EX-L come with a standard panoramic moonroof.

Interior

The Pilot’s family-friendly cabin is ergonomically sound, with standard heated power front seats and 3-zone climate control. Upholstery starts with cloth and progresses through leatherette and real leather at the top of the range. The TrailSport has dual 2nd-row captain’s chairs to seat seven, but the rest seat eight courtesy of a second-row bench, with a stowable center seat on EX-L and above. The third row will accommodate adults over short distances, but is best suited to children.

There are lots of clever storage solutions and physical HVAC buttons, and the tech offering includes a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster, a 12.3-inch touchscreen, Google Built-In, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Wi-Fi, and a 9-speaker audio system. Higher trims gain 12-speaker Bose audio, but only the Elite gets a head-up display.

Performance varies by trim, drivetrain, and as-tested weight, and the Pilot’s 0-60 sprint typically ranges from 6.9 to 7.8 seconds, so it’s adequately powerful but not quick. The 10-speed auto can get a bit frantic keeping the engine on the boil, but it usually hooks the right gear.

Ground Clearance

The default 7.3 inches of ground clearance isn’t very generous for an SUV, but it will deal with most rough roads. The TrailSport’s 8.3 inches and skid plates make it usable on light trails.

Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Usable third row
  • Intuitive controls with physical buttons
  • Stowable 2nd-row center seat
  • TrailSport offers decent off-road capability

Cons:

  • No hybrid option
  • V6 performance feels average
  • 3rd-row space trails some rivals
  • Warranty coverage lags Hyundai/Kia

Verdict

The Pilot doesn’t try to redefine the 3-row midsize segment and doesn’t stand out in terms of looks, ability, or performance. It does have a strong visual presence, up-to-date tech features, and a roomy interior, with seating for up to eight, best experienced in the high-value EX-L with its leather seats, parking sensors, wireless charging pad, and smaller 18-inch wheels with fatter tires for a softer ride.

It can’t match its Korean rivals for warranty coverage, the third row isn’t really suitable for adults, and the sole gas V6 is a drawback compared to hybrid rivals, but Honda may soon fix this with the expected hybridized Pilot. In the meantime, it continues to be a competitive offering in its segment, with the promise of Honda reliability and ease of ownership.
