2026 Honda Civic Si Vs. 2026 VW Jetta GLI: 4 Key Differences

2026 Honda Civic Si Vs. 2026 VW Jetta GLI: 4 Key Differences

There aren’t many affordable sports sedans around, but the Honda Civic Si and Volkswagen Jetta GLI are two of the best. With just enough power to have fun and their manual shifters, these sedans make the daily commute a lot less mind-numbing than it has to be. They’re also cheaper than more powerful rivals like the Hyundai Elantra N and Subaru WRX. But the GLI and Si have different personalities, both in the way they look and drive, so here’s a look at the key differences between the two.

1. Jetta More Comfortable, Civic More Fun

We got to drive both cars back-to-back earlier this year, giving us a great opportunity to pick out subtle differences between them. In general, the lighter Civic Si (it weighs just 2,952 pounds) is the more engaging car to drive. Steering is precise and communicative, and it has a playfulness missing in most other small sedans.

The Jetta GLI comes across as the more grown-up vehicle. Its seats are more comfortable and the ride is more supple, thanks to the adaptive suspension. It’s over 200 pounds heavier, though, so doesn’t feel quite as agile as the Honda, but the GLI is still fun when pushed hard. It just feels more polished and refined overall.

2. VW Is Quicker and More Powerful

Both cars have turbocharged engines, but the Honda’s is a smaller 1.5-liter, whereas the Volkswagen gets a 2.0-liter. Here’s how they compare.

The Jetta GLI is quicker on paper and feels it on the road, too, where its extra torque makes for more effortless overtaking maneuvers. The Honda doesn’t feel slow by any means, but the extra muscle of the Jetta is noticeable. Both cars direct power to the front wheels exclusively, but they’re not so powerful that this is an issue.

3. Only One Has An Automatic

If you enjoy rowing your own gears, both cars will impress with their six-speed manual gearboxes, which are satisfying to use. However, the Jetta GLi is also available with an optional seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. This setup may not be quite as fun as using the manual, but it does make the Jetta even quicker (a full second quicker to 60 than the Civic Si, based on independent testing).

There’s no major efficiency penalty to pay for choosing the automatic Jetta GLi, which gets the same 29 mpg combined rating as the manual model. The Civic Si is more efficient, though, and gets up to 31 mpg combined.

4. Honda Is Cheaper

The Honda Civic Si has a base price of $30,995. The VW Jetta GLI starts at $34,200, regardless of whether you go for the manual or automatic.

Both cars come with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED exterior lighting, and power sunroofs. The Civic Si has black and red cloth, while the Jetta GLI gets leather upholstery, but both enjoy heated front seats. The Honda has a larger touchscreen (nine inches to eight in the Jetta) and a better 12-speaker Bose sound system (eight speakers in the Jetta). A power driver’s seat with memory and ventilated front seats make it into the GLI, too.

That said, the Honda Civic Si is better value overall, although the Si isn’t necessarily the best Civic trim you can buy.

Final Thoughts

These are two brilliant takes on the compact, sporty sedan. If an engaging, communicative driving experience is what you crave, the Civic Si is likely to be more satisfying. It’s also a decent family car with good space and reasonable comfort, plus it has better economy. The Jetta GLI is a more pleasant vehicle for the daily commute and it’s more effortlessly powerful. If you want something that feels more premium, this is the one to get, and it’s the only car here that has an available automatic.
