Affordable crossovers destined to clash
The most affordable vehicles are often on the smaller side, and that rings true when it comes to the crossover segment. The 2026 Honda HR-V and Kia Seltos combine affordable pricing with space for up to five passengers and an extensive list of standard equipment. While they may be evenly matched at first glance, there are several differences between these two crossovers that might push one to the forefront for some consumers.

1. The 2026 Kia Seltos is the cheaper option
Every dollar counts for budget-conscious drivers, and the 2026 Kia Seltos is the clear crossover of choice in that arena. Starting at $23,690, the entry-level Kia Seltos LX undercuts the base $26,200 Honda HR-V LX by just over $2,500. For that relatively low price tag, the Seltos comes with basic equipment, including power-adjustable side mirrors and rear air conditioning vents. The base Seltos even comes equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
Kia
While the Honda HR-V might be more expensive, the base model comes with the equipment to match. Like the Seltos, Honda’s offering comes with all the basics and then some. The HR-V matches the Seltos with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, then ups the ante with a standard wireless smartphone charging pad and full LED lighting. You’ll pay the price for those niceties, though, and when budget is the primary concern, the Seltos is the more viable option.
2. The 2026 Kia Seltos is more efficient
The 2026 Kia Seltos is one of the more efficient models in its class, with FWD models peaking at a manufacturer-estimated 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway. Upgrading to AWD reduces fuel economy by one and three miles per gallon in city and highway driving, respectively. If you prefer power over efficiency, the range-topping SX trim comes with a standard all-wheel drivetrain, reducing fuel economy to 24 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.
Kia
The Honda HR-V is plenty efficient, but it doesn’t quite match the Seltos. The 2026 model is most efficient when equipped with front-wheel drive, earning up to 26 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. Upgrading to AWD reduces fuel economy by one and two miles per gallon in city and highway driving, respectively.
Note, however, that the Honda HR-V is available with a hybrid powertrain outside of the United States. Should that model make it to our shores, Honda’s smallest crossover could become one of the most efficient vehicles in its segment.

3. Top-spec Kia Seltos packs a punch
In its base form, the Kia Seltos is rather unimpressive when it comes to performance. The standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine powers all but the range-topping SX trim, producing 147 horsepower and 132 lb-ft of torque. A CVT sends power to the front wheels in most models, but AWD is available, although the cost varies by trim level. In the base LX, upgrading to AWD will run you another $1,200, while the S and EX are available with AWD for another $1,500 and $2,200, respectively.
Kia
For more exhilarating performance, there’s the Seltos SX trim, with its 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, eight-speed automatic transmission, and AWD. That combination generates 190 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque, making the Seltos one of the most powerful crossovers at its price point.
Over on Honda’s side of the road, all HR-V models are powered by the same 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and CVT, delivering 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Front-wheel drive comes standard on all models, while upgrading to AWD will cost you an additional $1,500.

4. The 2026 Honda HR-V offers better tech
There’s no denying that the 2026 Kia Seltos boasts pretty impressive equipment when it comes to tech, but there are a few crucial caveats. For example, the base LX is the only Seltos model equipped with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. All other models require a wired connection. The Honda HR-V, on the other hand, features wireless smartphone compatibility software and a charging pad at all trim levels. Wireless phone charging only comes standard in the Seltos EX and SX models.
For the 2026 model year, all Honda HR-V models get a nine-inch touchscreen display, which puts it in the middle of the Seltos range. While the base Seltos LX comes with an eight-inch display, all other models feature a 10.25-inch screen. Kia’s crossover has an edge in sound systems. The base Seltos model comes with two more speakers than the entry-level HR-V LX.

When it comes to safety, the Honda HR-V has a significant advantage. All Honda HR-V models come equipped with the automaker’s extensive suite of driver-assistive systems. The entire HR-V range includes adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow, traffic sign recognition system, and traffic jam assist, all of which the Seltos lacks.
5. The 2026 Kia Seltos boasts more cargo space
Crossovers, as the name entails, are a compromise of a sedan’s fuel economy with the cargo space of larger family vehicles. The 2026 Kia Seltos lives up to driver expectations of the segment, with folding rear seats and a dual-level cargo floor that helps make the most of every inch of space. The dedicated hatch offers up to 26.6 cu ft. of space, while folding the rear seats down increases cargo capacity to 62.8 cu ft.
Kia
The Honda HR-V, while spacious, falls short of its Korean rival’s cargo space. With the rear seats in their upright position, the HR-V offers 24.4 cu ft., just 2.2 cu ft. shy of matching the Seltos. Once the rear seats are stowed, however, that gap widens significantly. With the rear seats folded, the HR-V offers just 55.1 cu ft. of cargo space, 7.7 cu ft. less than what the Kia Seltos offers.

The 2026 Honda HR-V and Kia Seltos are affordably priced, but money isn’t the only factor to consider in your next crossover. While the Honda HR-V comes with more standard equipment, the Kia Seltos offers more cargo space, better fuel economy, and a turbocharged powertrain option. If you don’t mind paying a bit more for convenient connectivity and safety systems, then the HR-V wins out. If budget and space are at the top of your priorities, however, the Kia Seltos dominates this rivalry.
