duPont REGISTRY 40th Anniversary – Cover Cars: 1991

After 40 years, duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars capture moments in automotive history.

This year, duPont REGISTRY, the source for supercars since 1985, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In that time, some of the world’s most desirable, iconic, and influential luxury and exotic cars have graced the cover of our magazine over the past 40 years, and together, the cover cars of duPont REGISTRY’s hundreds of monthly issues tell a story of automotive history and its evolution since the ‘80s.

Looking back at duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars from the year 1991, some serious nostalgia is stirred up for any automotive enthusiast, and each year, a cover car shows an iconic moment of the past, when a car we see as a classic today was the hottest new creation on the market. Take a trip down memory lane and look at our 1991 magazine covers below, and continue to celebrate our milestone anniversary by buying a copy of our special 40th anniversary edition magazine.

January – Dodge Viper RT/10

Today, the Dodge Viper is discontinued, and fondly remembered by the community of automotive enthusiasts as one of the greatest supercar legends. However, it was 35 years ago when duPont REGISTRY started the year by putting the RT/10, the first iteration of the Viper, on its cover. With a V10 engine under its hood designed by Lamborghini, and a design inspired by classic American performance heroes, the Viper entered the scene as nothing short of a sensation.

February – Acura NSX

The Acura NSX is one of the most influential supercars ever made, and one of the greatest Japanese performance legends. Its mid-mounted V6 setup and enviable dynamics made it an agile performance machine that still holds up today as an enjoyable and highly collectible car. It took the cover spot of the February 1991 issue of duPont REGISTRY.

Cover of March 1991 duPont REGISTRY magazine featuring a red classic Ferrari sports car, celebrating the 40th Anniversary, with Cover Cars listed at the bottom and luxury sales information on the left.

March – Ferrari 250

The Ferrari 250 GT is one of the most influential and successful models of Ferrari’s early years. Its beautiful front fascia served as the cover star of duPont REGISTRY’s March 1991 issue.

Cover of the April 1991 duPont REGISTRY magazine featuring three classic Cover Cars, with text listing luxury car brands and a special 5th anniversary badge.

April – Porsche 356, Porsche 959, Porsche 911

A trio of Porsches graced the cover of duPont REGISTRY’s 1991 Anniversary Issue, all certainly worthy of cover status, like the 356 that started the story of Porsche, the 959 that showcased incredible performance innovation, and the legendary 911 that is still celebrated today.

Cover Cars: The May 1991 duPont REGISTRY magazine features a yellow Lamborghini Diablo and a list of luxury car brands at the bottom, marking the 40th Anniversary in style.

May – Lamborghini Diablo

A year after the Diablo’s appearance on the cover of duPont REGISTRY in May 1990, the then-new Lamborghini V12 flagship supercar was simply too sensational not to put on the cover again. Showcased in yellow against a purple background, the magazine cover is a striking display of bold color.

Cover of duPont REGISTRY magazine, June 1991 issue, featuring a red Mercedes-Benz 500 SL convertible photographed from above. Highlights Cover Cars for the 40th Anniversary and lists various luxury car brands at the bottom.

June – Mercedes-Benz 500 SL

The time-honored Mercedes-Benz SL nameplate was a mainstay of duPont REGISTRY covers, representing a gem of German engineering in the form of an iconic legacy of luxury grand tourer, including this June 1991 duPont REGISTRY cover star, a 500 SL which had a red exterior and a white interior.

Cover of the duPont REGISTRY July 1991 issue celebrating its 40th Anniversary, featuring three Cover Cars, marketplace information, and a list of luxury car brands.

July – Chevrolet Corvette

By July 1991, duPont REGISTRY gave the Chevrolet Corvette the starring role of July covers. Shown in two bold colors and in its fourth generation, the Corvette continued to be showcased as the quintessential American performance car.

Cover of duPont REGISTRY magazine, August 1991, featuring a white Rolls-Royce convertible with the top down, photographed from the front—a classic among Cover Cars.

August – Rolls-Royce Corniche

The open-top Rolls-Royce icon took the spot on duPont REGISTRY’s August 1991 cover. Its elegant look still holds up today, and because of the historic brand’s timeless design principles, the Corniche doesn’t look incredibly dissimilar to the Rolls-Royce models of today.

Cover of the September 1991 duPont REGISTRY features a white car with geometric patterns, blue starbursts highlighting market forecasts and auction coverage, and text on vintage automobiles—showcasing iconic Cover Cars for the 40th Anniversary.

September – BMW M1

The BMW M1 is still one of the most incredible masterpieces from the manufacturer, and until the XM, BMW hadn’t made an exclusive M model since. This specific example, with an artistic livery by Frank Stella, graced the September 1991 cover of duPont REGISTRY.

October 1991 duPont REGISTRY Cover Cars issue featuring a white Ferrari convertible, with headlines on exotics, auctions, and car show events—celebrating the 40th Anniversary of premier automotive excellence.

October – Ferrari Mondial

Ferrari’s Mondial is a unique moment in the brand’s history, as a grand tourer that combined a mid-mounted V8 engine with room for rear seats. With roses in the back seats, the Mondial is shown on duPont REGISTRY’s October 1991 cover in white.

Cover of the November 1991 duPont REGISTRY magazine featuring a yellow 1991 Lotus Elan convertible shown from front, side, and rear angles—one of the standout Cover Cars for the 40th Anniversary.

November – Lotus Elan

While the Elan is an iconic Lotus nameplate from the manufacturer’s earlier history, the Elan of the 90s was a charming front-engine, front-wheel drive convertible that unfortunately didn’t end up one of Lotus’ greatest sales successes. However, in the car’s early days, it starred on duPont REGISTRY’s November 1991 cover.

Cover Cars: duPont REGISTRY December 1991 issue featuring front and rear views of a red Porsche 968, Porsche logos, and headlines about car values and desirable cars—celebrating the 40th Anniversary of the iconic model.

December – Porsche 968

Successor to the Porsche 944, the Porsche 968 was the last of Porsche’s decades-long legacy of transaxle-equipped front-engine sports cars to be revealed, and it took the place of the December 1991 cover star of duPont REGISTRY.
