Watch The McLaren W1 Tackle Its Sub-Zero Winter Testing Phase On An Ice Track

The W1 is one step closer to future production and deliveries.

Often stored in private collections and occasionally driven to keep everything in check, it’s frequently forgotten that supercars and hypercars are engineered as production road cars with the ability to become daily drivers. And while it may be a stretch of the imagination to commute daily in a multi-million dollar hypercar, these pinnacle automotive examples are sent through the wringer as part of intense testing phases to ensure reliability. Prepping for the anticipated production of its next ground-breaking hypercar, McLaren is excited to give fans and future owners a sneak peek at the W1 prototype being put to the test in extreme, sub-zero conditions.

The artic testing took place at an undisclosed location in Artic Circle, Sweden, where McLaren engineers focused efforts on improving the W1 to be a true hypercar under all conditions. While a small portion of the testing was dedicated to the car’s exterior and how ice and snow build up, most of the time was spent on performance and how the W1 reacts on slick surfaces.

McLaren’s sophisticated all-wheel-drive system has been fine-tuned to make it safe and fun for owners who plan on driving their $2.1 million W1 in the winter. With a hybrid-assisted 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 that produces a combined 1,258 horsepower and 988 lb-ft of torque, it’s clear that McLaren has the brains to tame its most powerful creation to date.
